Wimbledon 2011: Which Longshot Has a Chance to Stun the Field?

Wimbledon 2011 To Feature A Challenger To Tennis Big 3?

It really is pretty remarkable how dominant Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer have been over the past seven years. From the time that Nadal won his first French Open in 2005 until Federer's triumph in London at the 2009 Wimbledon finals only once (Novak Djokovic's Australian Open win in January  2008) was did a Grand Slam end without Federer or Nadal being crowned the winner.

And if you throw Djokovic--the two time Australian Open champion--into that triumvirate has won 24 of the last 25 Grand Slam titles. Even in the heyday of Bjorn Borg, Jimmy Connors, and John McEnroe there wasn't that level of concentrated Grand Slam dominance.

That should make Argentina's Juan Martin Del Porto feel pretty proud: his 2009 US Open win over Federer made him the only man in the last 25 Grand Slams to edge out that Big 3 of men's tennis.

Since that September 2009 triumph in Flushing, Queens, del Porto hasn't been able to keep pace with Federer, Nadal, or Djokovic--far from it. He missed the last three "majors" of the 2010 season because of a wrist injury and failed to reach even the quarter-finals in the three he did compete in.

That, coupled with the fact that he's never done very well in London--failing to get out of the third round each of his three appearances--makes him an unlikely contender over the next two weeks.

But he did win an event back in May and easily dispensed with Italy's Flavio Cipolla (6-1, 6-4, 6-3) in this year's first round match.

Now because he is seeded so low (24th) he can't advance to the quarter finals without hurdling a titanic figure: He would have to defeat Nadal in the fourth round to get that far. But he has done that in the past, several times in regular ATP events, and once in Queens; On the way to his stunning US Open win he toppled the Spaniard 6-2, 6-2, 6-2.
