NBA Draft 2011: How Big of a Gamble Is Jan Vesely?

At 6?11, 240-pounds, Jan Vesely is like brick wall in the middle of the key. The 21-year-old Czech power forward is known for his ability to finish at the rim and reliable perimeter shooting, a quality elusive to most big men.

However, Vesely is one of those international players with a unique story. After taking his name out of the 2010 NBA draft just days before it commenced, Vesely concentrated on improving his game and has been competing in a variety of leagues, like the Serbian, Adriatic and Euroleague.

Now that he?s prepared to play in the NBA, it?s difficult to discern whether or not Vesely is the next Dirk Nowitzki or Darko Milicic.

So how big of a gamble is Jan Vesely?

According to ESPN, Vesely averaged 10.4 ppg and 4.3 rpg in Euroleague play last season, meaning he hasn?t proven he can be a dominant force on either end of the court. The disparity between the ?European? and ?American? styles of basketball have been perpetually disputed, but most often deems the kind of play Vesely is accustomed to as ?soft? and not physical enough.

The fact is that Vesely will be drafted, by whom remains to be seen, but his impact in the NBA will be a testament to his ability to adapt, as well as his relentlessness in the face of what will surely be a serious uphill battle.
