I know what they should do, but nobody really knows what they will do at this point.
Right now it seems fairly certain that they?re going to go with Kyrie Irving at No. 1. That?s the right idea. This is a fragile fanbase. Irving is the clear No. 1 pick, you?re not going to get an argument out of anyone, and if for some reason they don?t pick him and he goes off to shine somewhere else, it will haunt them forever.
So you?ve got that locked down (sorry, D-Will, there?s just no feeling like having an elite point guard on your team). The next thing they should do is take Kanter. All indications are he?ll be there at No. 4.
If that?s the case, don?t even wait. Stop David Stern before he walks away from the podium after announcing the No. 3 pick and tell him to march back up there and announce Kanter. He?s perfect for Cleveland.
He?s got an NBA-ready game and body so he?ll contribute right away, he?s got the highest ceiling of anybody in this draft, and he?s loyal.
Did you hear that, Cleveland? He?s loyal. If the NCAA would have allowed him to play, there?s a very real chance he?d be back at Kentucky right now. He wanted to play there.
This is the kind of guy who, when he is embraced by the fans (which he will be), he?ll embrace them back. He came to UK?s March Madness dressed as the Undertaker. He?s got personality to go with his game. Correct me if I?m wrong, but that?s exactly the kind of thing Cleveland needs right now.
They need a star. If they play their cards right, they just may get two.
