2011 NBA Mock Draft Sees San Antonio Grab Potential Help for Future in Davis Bertans
The San Antonio Spurs are getting old. There's little doubt about that in the NBA. Tim Duncan has hit his decline, Manu Ginobili is all kinds of beaten up, and Tony Parker could be on his way out of town because he can't stop hitting on his ex-teammates' wives. So, look for the Spurs to fill a need and build for the future by grabbing Latvian starlet Davis Bertans.
The 6'10" Latvian presents serious matchup issues at the small forward position because of his size and athleticism. His range extends well beyond the three-point line, and he's got the skill and quickness to beat his man off the dribble and get to the basket. His rebounding is fairly solid, and his defense is pretty good, as well.
It's not all sunshine and roses with Bertans, though. He has issues with his shot selection at times, and needs to bulk up a bit. On top of that, his hefty contract all but ensures he'll be stashed in Europe for a couple more years, but San Antonio can afford to wait.
They could chase someone like Tyler Honeycutt here for more immediate impact, but they've shown a willingness to be patient with international prospects, and Bertans' upside has to be tempting for a team looking to reload their young talent pool.
