Golden State Warriors' first-round draft pick Klay Thompson has been lauded by scouts as one of the most underrated players in this class. He's an elite shooter with great size for the shooting guard position (6'7", 210 lbs.) and hails from a NBA family bloodline.
But this pick is head scratching for a few reasons. For starters, the Warriors desperately need an upgrade on defense. Klay Thompson is a work-in-progress on the defensive side of the ball.
And more importantly, the team already has great scoring guards in Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis. Even more curiously, team general manager Jerry West has insisted that the team plans to keep Monta Ellis into the upcoming NBA season.
Despite this public-backing, The New York Post's Peter Vescey reports today that Ellis may be asking for his way out the door.
A few days ago, it appeared as if the Warriors had decided to keep Ellis despite some very attractive propositions. However, late yesterday, they were back to giving serious thought to moving him if the pitch blew them away. Word has it Ellis' agent, Jeff Fried, who did not return my call, informed management his client wants to be dealt.
With Jerry West and new head coach Mark Jackson taking over the Warriors, the team wants to head in a new direction and instill a defensive philosophy into the team. There will certainly need to be changes to the roster
The bottom line here is that actions speak louder than words. The Warriors just drafted a young player at Ellis' position who they like a lot and want to take the team in a new direction. Read between the lines: Monta Ellis won't be with the team by the end of next season.
