Yuriorkis Gamboa Beats Jorge Solis Better Than Manny Pacquiao

The appetizer of two undefeated featherweights (126 lbs) Matt Remillard vs. Mickey Garcia was mildly interesting until the end as Garcia's power accumulated damage to Remillard.

The match was still more sad than exciting.

Watching Remillard's lack of punching power keep him from being able to properly protect his undefeated record in the featherweight showdown. And now, a moment of silence for Remillard's "0."

That was only the undercard of Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Jorge Solis, the "measuring stick" fight we came to see.

On April 14, 2007, Manny Pacquiao knocked out Solis in Round 8 of a great featherweight showdown.

Gamboa wanted to obliterate that performance tonight with his own dominance. He started slowly in the first round, before knocking Solis down TWICE in the second round.

Solis got up both times, but Solis didn't looking happy about getting up a third time at the end of the third round. Gamboa used an interesting half-jab/half-hook to knock Solis down.

Fourth round began, and Gamboa put him down a fourth time before finally finishing him off with a flurry against the ropes that sent him down a fifth and final time.

The referee waved off the fight on the fifth knockdown. In the postfight interview, Solis was asked about comparing Gamboa to Pacquiao. He said Gamboa hits harder than Pacquiao.

Given that Gamboa knocked Solis out in half the time it took Pacquiao to do so, that may be true. If that isn't a statement well-made, I'm not sure what is.
