After a seven-year hiatus, WWE Tough Enough, the reality show that brought us The Miz, John Morrison and Josh Mathews is making a comeback on USA Network. The face of WWE's "Attitude Era" "Stone Cold" Steve Austin will host the show, which will run from April 4 to June 6.
Between its original run from 2001-2004, WWE Tough Enough was fun and entertaining to watch, with over-the-top challenges, as well as competitors having never-give-up attitudes. It rivaled in comparison to legendary reality shows such as Survivor, Real World (in which The Miz was also a cast member) and Road Rules.
But now, we fast forward to 2011.
In my opinion, WWE Tough Enough will not be as successful as the first incarnation because one, the format is a little outdated and vague, and second, it prevents USA Network from televising three-hour episodes of Monday Night RAW. (In my opinion, the WWE is in dire need to refresh both the RAW and SmackDown rosters.) Plus, from what I read from various sources, the tapings are not going as smoothly as planned.
And besides, we already have a WWE-based reality show. WWE NXT may be airing as a webcast now, but at least, it had plenty of wrestling. From what I've read, WWE Tough Enough is more like a WWE version of CMT's reality show Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making The Team.
And as hard as they might, WWE Tough Enough may sound like a good idea at first, but, in my opinion, I see it as another failed attempt from the WWE, just like the XFL (does the Los Angeles Extreme ring a bell? They were the first [and only] XFL Champions).
