BCS Eliminator: Whose Championship Dreams Are over After Week 1?

We know, we know.  It's a little early to be thinking about the BCS Championship game when it's still four months away.  But with the limited action we've seen so far, we can already rule out some preseason top 25 teams from title contention, and also identify some others who have dug themselves a big, if not insurmountable, hole.

In addition, we'll single out a couple of teams that were victorious this week, but had performances that caused us to raise a concerning eyebrow.

We'll start by looking at the teams that shouldn't even bother thinking about playing in the championship game anymore.

Alabama Football: Darius Philon Commits to Alabama After Dumping Auburn

Defensive linemen became a concern with 17 commitments already in the stable for the 2012 signing class but accepting the commitment of Darius Philon helped with that concern.

The 6'2'', 285 pound defensive end from Vigor High School in Pritchard, Alabama is the 18th commitment for Nick Saban so far this year and is one more Vigor High athlete to come to the Crimson Tide.

Previously Vigor has sent Marvin Shinn, Jalston Fowler and B.J. Scott to Alabama, who is on a torrid pace and may have their 19th commitment later this next week with Amari Cooper.

Philon was flying under the radar until midway through his junior year and by year's end, his 89 tackles started getting some attention from some major BCS schools including Auburn who he quickly committed to after receiving an offer from the Tigers.

However, this summer, he attended a camp in Tuscaloosa and Nick Saban and company saw that the young man had a lot of potential with his impressive speed off the ball and work ethic.

They decided to offer Philon a scholarship at the conclusion of that camp in late June and he began the process of  decomitting from Auburn.

On Thursday he had it official by changing his commitment to Alabama.

So why would he dump Auburn?

"He committed this morning. I think that's basically where he wanted to go the whole time," Vigor coach Kerry Stevenson said to Jamie Newberg of ESPN. "He grew up fan of Alabama while his father loves Auburn. It's like he's fulfilling a dream because Alabama is the place where he wanted to go."

Philon is also a great student as well as an athlete and has the great grades and ACT scores to qualify at any college, so academics are not an issue with this explosive defensive lineman.

Ironically enough, Vigor's other defensive end, JaMichael Winston is also someone who 14 schools have already offered including Ohio State, Mississippi State, Arkansas and Michigan State among others.

Could Auburn go after the other end at Vigor to make up for the one they lost to the Tide? That would be an interesting development and shows just how much talent there is on that Vigor team.

2011 College Football Preseason Top 25: Projections with Video Analysis

Dan Hope’s 2011 Preseason CFB National Top 25 (Based on Season Projections)

It is that time once again. On Thursday, September 1st, the 2011 college football season officially commences, which means that months of week-to-week excitement that will shake up the ranks of college football are ahead of us.

In the preseason, it is impossible to know how the college football season will play out; never would have I predicted that Auburn and Oregon would be the top two teams in college football last year. However, I have projected all the games over the course of the season, and by doing so, have come up with projected records for all of the top teams. Using those season projections, I have come up with my preseason top-25.

Let me make it clear that my rankings over the course of the season will be very different than the standard polls; even if most of these teams win in Week 1, expect drastic changes, because I go by what happens on the field, not based upon preseason expectations. However, this is how my poll would play out at the end of the season if all of my projections were correct, and that is how I have come up with my preseason poll for 2011.

Teams are listed with their projected record (not including bowl game), along with last season’s final ranking in my end-of-season poll.

Wisconsin Badgers Football: 10 Reasons Why They Can Win the Big Ten Title

After a dominating 51-17 victory over UNLV on Thursday night, the Wisconsin Badgers look like a very strong team.

With Montee Ball and James White, the Badgers have the best running back duo in the country.

And now at quarterback they've added Russell Wilson, who can also make plays with his feet.

Add in a strong head coach and a stout defense, and the Badgers are the front-runners for the Big Ten title.

They should be able to control the clock against any team in the Big Ten, especially when the weather turns sour.

Here are the top 10 reasons that the Badgers will take the Big Ten crown.

Five Keys to the Washington Redskins Success This Season

Going into the 2011-2012 NFL campaign, the Washington Redskins future looked dull. There were questions at almost every position prior to this offseason and many skeptics (including myself) expected the worst. Admittedly, I previously claimed that I should reserve an Andrew Luck rookie jersey for next year.

After three stellar performances in the preseason, do I think this team is going to make a run at the NFC East title? No, but an overall improvement of last season should be at least the minimum. By looking at this simplistically, what has impressed me the most thus far is the effort I am seeing on the football field. All the way from the clear-cut starters, to players trying to make a name for themselves.

Please note that it is unrealistic to predict an outcome of a season after preseason play, (just ask the Colts poor preseason record), but I can’t help but notice the exertion shown from every player. The defense has a tenacity that it lacked last year, receivers are blocking downfield and running backs are fighting for that extra inch.

Redskins players and officials no longer have to answer any questions regarding Albert Haynesworth or Donovan McNabb. They don’t have a former bingo operator calling plays on offense and Jason Taylor hasn’t been brought in to be the team’s premier pass rusher.

While I would be astonished if the Skins were to make a playoff run this season, my opinion of their record has changed and now foresee a higher win total in comparison to last year, as well as complete all 16 games without outlandish off the field distractions fully emasculating the team’s common goal.

I have put together five imperative keys to the Washington Redskins success this season, barring one exception: the quarterback. The John Beck and Rex Grossman position battle will most likely be played throughout the season and their situation is obvious.

The keys listed below can easily determine the outcome of the season and if performed effectively, we may be in for a surprise.

Who Will Be the Top 5 Running Backs in 2011?

The following is not a list of fantasy projections. Now, obviously if I think a running back is going to have a great season then there’s a good chance he will also be very productive in fantasy football. However, this list is of the five best RBs for 2011 in real football, NOT fantasy. Are we clear? Great! If there are no more questions, we shall begin….
