Washington Wizards Trade Analysis: Kirk Hinrich to the Atlanta Hawks
This is a great trade for the Wizards. Here's the deal in simplified (and business) terms:
—Kirk Hinrich for Mike Bibby (both have one more year, Bibby for ~$1.5 million less).
—Hilton Armstrong for Mo Evans (both free agents, Wiz clear an extra ~$1.5 million off the books this summer).
—Wiz get Jordan Crawford ($1.2 million for 2011-12) for their trouble.
—Wiz get the Hawks 2011 first-round pick (in the 18-22 range) for god-knows-what-reason.
Crawford was the 27th pick this past year and had a lot of buzz going into the draft. The Hawks were only giving him 10 minutes a game, and the Wizards will happily work him out for the next two months.
The draft pick is a real sweetener, with Atlanta not notably improved after the trade and numerous other teams ahead of them in the standings. At worst this will be the 22nd pick—players going around there in mocks are Markieff Morris, Tristan Thompson and Nolan Smith (Morris would be especially nice).
As for Bibby and Evans, neither are in the Wizards' long-term plans. Bibby can serve as a backup point guard and play some time at SG, while continuing to mentor John Wall in the tricks of the trade. Evans is a "shooter," who is having the worst season of his career in a contract year.

Depending on the new CBA, the Wizards will be about $5 million under the cap for next season (if they decline options/QAs on Yi and Thorton), and then as much as $7 million under for 2012-13. The latter figure assumes they keep their current draft picks and pick up Team Options on almost all of their players on rookie scale contracts.
Another more unlikely option is that the Wizards make another move before this year's deadline. The two intriguing names on the block are Greg Oden and OJ Mayo.
Oden has a Qualifying Offer at $8.8 million, which might require the Wizards trade some assets to stay under the cap next season, depending on the new CBA agreement. Mayo might not like the idea of playing for a rebuilding team again, but a package of Bibby, Crawford and the Hawks' first-round pick may appeal to the Grizzlies.
This situation would ostensibly mean they traded Hinrich and Armstrong for Mayo and Mo Evan's expiring contract.
Either way, the Wizards increased their flexibility with this deal and picked up a number of assets disproportionate to what they lost. We know the team is in rebuilding mode, and this was certainly a step in the right direction.
Lane Kiffin: Who's Really to Blame for Tennessee Troubles?
If you're on the farm, you ask logical questions about your day-to-day problems. For instance: Why is my garden destroyed? Answer: Someone let the goats out.
My hens are dead? Answer: Someone left the door open to the coop, and a coyote raided it.
These are cut-and-dry answers to the simplest of questions—much like, why is Tennessee facing NCAA allegations of recruitment violations? Answer: Athletic director Mike Hamilton left the coop door open.
There is an old query that begs, who do you blame for a bad plate of eggs, the hen or the cook? Hamilton's spatula must be broken; he had (note that I said had) a basket full of mulligans from fundraising and hiring Bruce Pearl, Tennessee's men's basketball coach. But where did he go wrong?
The mulligans started to disappear when former head coach Phillip Fulmer began losing games he shouldn't have lost. Fans looked to Fulmer for improvement, but ultimately the responsibility falls on the AD.
The overall consensus was that Hamilton allowed Fulmer to bully him around and only forced him into retirement because the Big Orange illuminati forced him to do so when he failed to act. By the way, Mike, make sure the old coach has a graceful exit; he won a national championship for us. Don't do anything stupid where he's crying on TV or anything, okay? Cool.

If I were an athletic director at one of the SEC's most prestigious programs, I would at this point evaluate my skill sets, smile nice for the cameras and make sure I don't piss off a fanbase of roughly five million people, including alumni and staff. Oooops.
Instead he proudly shouldered the meteoric success of Bruce Pearl, defiantly claiming, Hey, I hired him...well, sort of. Surely with Pearl's improvements I can ride his coattails and hire another super coach? I mean, hire someone else to hire someone else. That's worked out so far, right? Hey Bruce, you don't need any supervision recruiting, right? Awesome, keep winning.
Then Ken and Barbie showed up, and everyone was completely fooled by their sincere commitment and the media firestorm about what was coming for Tennessee. Who was there to smile for the cameras first as Lane Kiffin promised the defunct, fabled Florida win? Answer: We all were, but this time Hamilton was holding the camera. Okay Lane, stand next to General Neyland's maxims. Lane, why are you holding a butcher's knife?
Immediately SEC coaches were rubbed the wrong way by his brash demeanor and disrespectful approach to the traditions and culture of all things SEC. By the way, this is Ed Orgeron. Could you make sure we've got crates of fresh kittens? He gets really hungry when he sheds. Hey Ed, can you unpack those highlight reels of Reggie Bush, and while you're at it, hang up a few of those Matt Leinart photos next to Peyton Manning's?

Again, you would think at this point that Hamilton would examine any allegations directed at a rookie NCAA head coach. Hey Lane, do you need any supervision recruiting? You and Ed know the rules, right? Yeah Mike, we got the rulebook right here...wink...wink.
Hey Bruce, how's the recruiting going? Uh...Mike, can we talk a minute?
It's really a matter of common sense. When the hen house is being pilfered, you don't burn the house down to rid the vermin. You let them leave with a hen and then you greet them when their mouth is full. The very last thing you do is confront the person who left the door open.

Lovable Lambeau: Why The Green Bay Packers' Stadium Is The NFL's Best
Lambeau Field sits along Lombardi Avenue in Green Bay, Wisconsin and stands as a monument of nearly a century of Packers' history. It was named after Curly Lambeau, the Packers' founder, as well as player and head coach.
For any avid football fan it is a necessity to at least make one pilgrimage to the historic gridiron to see Titletown's team give it their all on the legendary turf. Although if you mind the cold, you had better get tickets to a game before November rolls around or you'll find yourself shivering on the bleacher seats next to a man wearing only blaze orange and a cheesehead.
You'll still see the occasional Favre jersey or Ray Nitschke throwback, but now most Packer backers are clothing themselves with Rodgers or Matthews attire. From the military fly over to the end of the game, it is a memorable experience. Besides the exquisite tailgating and Miller Lite, here is why Lambeau Field is the best stadium in the NFL.

UFC 127 Fight Card: 10 Early Pre-Fight Predictions from Australia
February 27th is rapidly approaching as the end date for UFC 127: Penn vs. Fitch, which is headlined by a welterweight contender battle between Jon Fitch and BJ Penn at the Acer Arena in Sydney, Australia.
Topping what transpired in the MMA world over the last couple of weekends will be a lofty task, but there are plenty of exciting things surrounding UFC 127 to anticipate. This will mark the UFC’s second venture into the Land Down Under, following UFC 110, to the undeniable delight of Australian fight fans—some of the most energetic, frenzied spectators in the world.
UFC 127 sold out within moments of going public, making it the fastest selling event, along with UFC 115, in the promotion’s history. That happens to be an astonishing accomplishment considering the many Georges St-Pierre headlined events we’ve seen in Canada over the last couple of years.
Clearly when Aussies aren’t being one with nature—boxing with kangaroos, juggling scorpions and black widows, wrestling with alligators—they are eagerly awaiting live mixed martial arts action.
The stage has been set. All pieces are in place, leaving us with the familiar, but agonizing, task of waiting for the next two weeks to fly by so we can get our fix.
Let’s take a peek at a few early predictions we can count on happening once UFC 127 lands in the southern hemisphere February 27th.

Dallas Cowboys: Jason Witten and John Phillips The Best TE Tandem In The NFL?
The Dallas Cowboys have seemed to have remembered they have a Pro-Bowl Tight End on their roster.
In 2010, the TE position for the Dallas Cowboys took a major hit in the preseason at the Hall of Fame game. Tight end John Phillips was lost for the season after suffering a torn ACL on his right knee. Phillips was going to be a big target for the Cowboys. You could tell because they kept going to him in that game.
In steps Jason Witten after the injury to Phillips. Not that he wasn’t the No. 1 TE on the team before, but in the red zone in 2009, Witten was practically invisible. The coaching staff seemed to have forgotten he was a good target for them in the end zone. It was evident for the fact that Witten scored only two TDs in 2009.
This comes from the fact that the offensive play calling was horrible at best in 2009. Even in the red zone, you saw Witten staying in and blocking, more so than out on a route to get the Cowboys in the end zone. You can’t take away threat like that.
The remarks from Wade Phillips are still in the air in Dallas, regarding why Witten was not on a route during the final moments of the Denver Broncos game in Week 4 in 2009.
“The Broncos defense was dictating the way we called offensive plays.”
What did he say? Aren’t you a defensive coordinator? You know better. The Denver Broncos defense was not better than the Cowboys offense as far as talent on the field was concerned.

Makes one wonder: If you are a good offensive team, don’t you dictate the way the defense plays? Of course! Especially in the red zone?
Witten stayed in and blocked in that game, and Romo tried to force the ball to Sam Hurd two times on the final two plays of the game. They ended up losing that game 17-10.
Why wasn’t Witten in a route in the end zone? With a big target like Witten, they needed to get the ball to him. Not utilizing even the threat of him getting the ball in the red zone was irresponsible. Witten is one heck of a decoy.
In 2010, the Cowboys did discover Witten and made the most of his talent. Witten scored nine TDs with 94 receptions. Only Roddy White and Reggie Wayne caught more. He became a favorite target of Jon Kitna.
Depending on what we see with the CBA this offseason, and depending on if there is a season, Witten will need to be utilized like last season with a mix of John Phillips as well. More targets more options for success.
We will see if Jason Garrett gets it and keeps rolling with the best talent on the field.
With a talent like Witten, and his ability to make average QBs look great, you have to involve him heavily in the offensive plan in 2011.
The Cowboys should have some of the best TEs in the NFL in 2011.

UFC 127 Media Call: Jon Fitch Speaks About Fighting B.J. Penn
When asked how B.J. Penn fits into the UFC's welterweight division, Fitch replied, "B.J's dangerous at any weight class, he brings a certain type of skill set that if you make a mistake he's able to capitalize and put you away. That transfers into any weight class."
"As a welterweight I have certain advantages in size, but it's not going to be enough, I had to work a lot on speed, and explosiveness and keeping him in tight to make sure there are no mistakes in this fight."
When asked if it was difficult to stay motivated, Fitch said, "Against B.J. Penn? Hell no. The things that he's done and the person he is, that's all the motivation I need."
"I got a job to do on the 26th and that's beat B.J. Penn and that's all I care about right now."
MLB Preview: 10 Most Underrated Defenders
Though hitting is the real glamour aspect of the sport, defense in baseball is just as or even more critical.
Many players make their living based on defensive skills.
MLB’s system of Gold Gloves is very flawed. Once a player wins one, their reputation precedes them for the next year’s voting.
For example, there was no way Derek Jeter should have won the Gold Glove last season. He may have had the highest fielding percentage, but lacked the range of some other shortstops.
A handful of strong offensive players are often overlooked for their defense.
Here's a list of the 10 most underrated defenders in baseball today.

Czechmate: Tomas Kaberle Waives No Trade Clause; Will Be Traded In 24-72 Hours
After Brian Burke went ahead and traded away Kris Versteeg to Philadelphia for a first- and third-round pick, many have speculated the wheeling and dealing in Toronto is not done yet.
The Maple Leafs are now down one NHL caliber forward (who was a pretty good one at that) and will almost definitely look to trade for an NHL caliber forward. The type of player, however, can be a bottom-six grinder or a top-six talent. It all depends on who or what Burke decides to move. (The third round pick may be in play for a forward)
Just minutes ago, various reliable sources have told me that Tomas Kaberle has finally waived his no-trade clause and a deal will occur in 24-72 hours. Ideally, the Toronto Maple Leafs are looking for a few picks with one of them being a first rounder, a solid prospect, and a young top-six forward that can make an impact on the roster now. Usually, in the event that a player waives his no-trade clause, news is rarely broken until the player is actually traded and as of right now the news on Kaberle should be viewed as a highly reliable rumor.
With Kaberle finally waiving his no-trade clause, a ton of possible trade scenarios have infiltrated the minds of fans and general managers around the league.
UPDATE:
9:03 PM EST: @TheFourthPeriod "On a separate note, told Kaberle has not yet officially waived his no-trade clause." The topic is obviously being discussed among the beat writers and TFP's track record is not as accurate as @IncarceratedBob. More on this soon.

9:19 PM EST: @CraigCustance (highly reputable; writes for sportingenews.com) "Burke said that his agent has asked for complete secrecy regarding possible deals and he's respecting it" Just asked him if Kaberle would waive and this was his response on my other twitter.
9:29 PM EST: @IncarceratedBob "Curran will not tell MEDIA that his client( Kaberle )waived NTC until Burke finalizes the deal. They made this agreement last week"Just more info.
9:33 PM EST: Four teams that are highly interested: Rangers, Bruins, Kings, Red Wings; all contenders at this point.
Stay tuned for more updates coming soon!

Silver Future For Liverpool As Raheem Sterling Lights Up FA Youth Cup
It is always possible to pinpoint a moment when a young player bursts into public consciousness. Pele winning the 1958 World Cup at 17. A 16 year-old Wayne Rooney beating David Seaman with a spectacular goal for Everton against Arsenal.
It might not be quite on the same scale, but Raheem Sterling might now have a moment of his own.
Sterling scored a remarkable five goals in Liverpool's 9-0 demolition of Southend in the FA Youth Cup Round of 16, including an incredible solo effort where he cut in from the left wing to score with a strike that is probably still rising over the Mersey.
The 16 year-old has already represented England at Under-16 and Under-17 level and it now seems it is only a matter of time before he makes the step up to Under-21.
Sterling is still a schoolboy, yet Liverpool has no qualms in paying QPR £300,000 for the winger when he was still 15. In doing so, the Reds secured a player that had been sought by Man Utd, Man City and Spurs - the investment is looking like a bargain after tonight's showing.
The rest of the Youth Team contributed well, including an eye-catching performance from England Under-17 captain Conor Coady, but Sterling will grab all the plaudits and the headlines.
Liverpool will now face either Manchester United or Newcastle in the quarter final and will be hoping to emulate their last success in the competition, when the youth side lifted the trophy in 2007.

Of that generation, only Jay Spearing has graduated to the first team, but Liverpool will certainly be hoping that Sterling will eventually make the jump to senior level.
Liverpool's Head of Fitness and Conditioning, Dan Burgess, wrote on Twitter, "Raheem Stirling [sic] hat trick comes as no surprise. Unbelievable skill and never looks out of place when he trains with the first team."
It surely bodes well for Sterling's future prospects that the coaching staff see his potential when training with the seniors and the backroom will surely look to promote the youngster through the ranks. Fans will be desperate for a glimpse of Sterling at a higher level, but Dalglish will be well served to keep his brightest young talent under wraps for now.
As is always the case with young players with big reputations, the key will be keeping expectations tempered and the media glare away for as long as possible.
It seems inevitable, though, that Sterling will be shining on a Premier League stage sooner rather than later.

NBA Trade Rumors: The Latest on Carmelo Anthony Rumors
After the way Dwight Howard completely dominated the Lakers, it is probably safe to say Carmelo Anthony is not going to make his way to LA. Pau Gasol and Andrew Bynum were unable to handle Howard on either end of the court.
The dominant play of Howard with Bynum and Gasol on the court has to make the Lakers wonder what would have happened if their services were not available down low. Odds are any trade proposal put together to acquire Anthony would involve Andrew Bynum leaving town.
Anthony creates mismatches that make him an asset to any basketball team. Too big for a three, too athletic for a four, Anthony is difficult to match up against.
The Lakers may be out of the running, but Anthony is still on the trade block. The Nets originally said they were out of the Melo sweepstakes, but could find themselves back in. The Nets have a struggling basketball team with talented, movable pieces.
It is clear that the Nets need to shake up their roster. Devin Harris and Derrick Favours could be coupled with a pick and draw serious consideration for an Anthony package deal. It could be a solid move for both teams. Fans would start coming to watch the Nets and the Nuggets could in turn obtain a crop of young talent.
The front runner in obtaining Anthony could very well be the New York Knicks. Anthony has shown an interest in playing in his hometown and could join another super star in Amar'e Stoudemire. Stoudemire will likely be the only untouchable asset in the trade and the Knicks will be expected to part ways with a number of young prospects and potentially a first round pick.
Many outlets are saying Anthony talks are heating up, but that is inevitable only because the trade deadline is quickly approaching. At this point, it's anyone's game. We have seen too often an anticlimactic finish to speculation of this sort. Don't be surprised to see February 24th come and go, with Anthony remaining in Denver.

Philadelphia Philles and San Francisco Giants: Cliff Lee Vs Matt Cain
The Philadelphia Phillies and the San Francisco Giants have two of the best pitching rotations in baseball heading into the 2011 season. The Phillies rotation is full of veteran leadership and true ace-caliber pitching. The Giants rotation is young, full of potential and battle tested. The Phillies are led by Roy Halladay, while Tim Lincecum sits atop the Giants rotation. Both are two-time Cy Young Award winners and considered among the few elite pitchers in baseball.
However, much of the debate when looking at these two rotations comes when comparing Cliff Lee and Matt Cain. Some like Cain, while others prefer Lee. I am going to look at the statistics of both Cain and Lee over the past three seasons to make an informed decision as to who I believe will be the better No. 2 starter in 2011.
I used Fangraphs as my source for statistics. Also, I am not going to explain all of the abbreviations I use. Head over to Baseball Prospectus if you need definitions.
In 2008, Cliff Lee won the American League Cy Young Award. He started 31 games, pitched 223.1 innings and finished with a 22-3 record. Cliff Lee also led the league with a 2.54 ERA and a 168 ERA+. Lee posted a K/BB: 5.0, while compiling a WHIP of 1.11. Lee’s FIP was 2.83, which does not differ much from his actual ERA showing just how effective Lee was in 2008.
His BABIP was .301 showing luck did not factor into his performance. Finally, Lee posted an astonishing WAR of 7.2. After reviewing Lee’s 2008 numbers, it is easy to see why he was named the AL Cy Young Award winner.

Matt Cain pitched 34 games and 217.2 innings while compiling an 8-14 record in 2008. Although an 8-14 record is not very impressive, I do not consider a pitchers record nearly as important as other statistics when trying to determine their actual value. There are too many factors which the pitcher cannot control when determining the winner/loser of a game.
Moving on…Cain posted an ERA of 3.76, ERA+ of 118 and WHIP of 1.36. Cain’s FIP was 3.91, just slightly higher than his actual ERA. All of these are good numbers, but not outstanding. His BABIP was .297, which is right around the league average showing, like Lee, his success should not be attributed to luck. Cain’s K/BB ratio of 2.04 was quite ordinary. Although Cain’s K/9 was 7.7, which was better than Lee’s 6.9, his BB/9 was 3.8, which was significantly worse than Lee’s 1.4. Cain’s 3.7 WAR was very good, but it was not elite.
2008 Advantage: Cliff Lee
In 2009, Cliff Lee started the season with the Indians before being traded midseason to the Philadelphia Phillies. Between the two teams he pitched 231.2 innings and started 34 games. He finished with a 14-13 record. Lee had a 3.22 ERA, an ERA+ of 131 and a WHIP of 1.24. Lee once again produced a FIP 3.11, almost identical to his actual ERA and a BABIP, .315, right around the norm. Lee’s K/BB ratio fell a bit from 2008 to 4.21.

Lee’s WAR value was calculated at 6.6. These are all numbers which are expected from a front of the rotation pitcher. Lee’s numbers dropped off a bit from his Cy Young performance in 2008, but that was expected. He still put up very impressive numbers across two leagues.
Matt Cain pitched 33 games and 217.2 innings in 2009. He finished with a record of 14-8. He produced an ERA of 2.89, ERA+ 148 and WHIP of 1.18. All of these numbers were better than Lee’s. However, Cain’s FIP was 3.89, which is a full run higher than his actual ERA. This would suggest his numbers may be a little better than they should have been. This could be attributed to his BABIP of .263 which is much lower than the norm of .300. Both his FIP and BABIP would suggest Cain was a little lucky in 2009 and should have posted higher numbers across the board. He once again posted a pedestrian 2.34 K/BB ratio.
Cain finished with a WAR of only 3.5, which was actually slightly less than his 2008 WAR.
2009 Advantage: Tie. Advanced statistics show Lee had a better 2009 but Cain put up a better ERA, WHIP and ERA+. Therefore, I would say this is a toss up.
2010 once again saw Lee switching teams midseason. He missed his first few starts because of injury, but still pitched 212.1 innings over 28 games. He compiled a 12-9 record. Lee posted an ERA of 3.18, ERA+ 130 and a WHIP of 1.00. These are very good numbers, however, his FIP, 2.58 suggests he was even better than those numbers. His 2.58 FIP was second best in the entire league for 2010. His BABIP was .287, once again showing his numbers were not effected much by luck.

Lee’s most astonishing number was his 10.28 K/BB ratio which led the league. For the season, Lee walked only 18 batters while striking out 185. Lee, by all accounts, had one of his best seasons in 2010. He finished with a WAR of 7.1 which was best in the league.
In 2010 Cain pitched 223.1 innings across 35 games. His record was 13-11. Cain posted an ERA of 3.14, ERA+ 130 and a WHIP of 1.084. However, once again his FIP, 3.65 was much higher than his actual ERA. His BABIP, .252, was also much lower than the norm. Both of these factors would suggest Cain benefited from luck in 2010 and should have had worse numbers than he actually posted.
His K/BB ratio rose slightly to 2.90, but was still nothing special. Especially when compared to Lee. Cain posted a good WAR of 4.0.
2010 Advantage: Cliff Lee. His K/BB ratio, WAR, and FIP place him among the elite pitchers in 2010.
As you can see, both pitchers are very good and most teams would be lucky to have them as their No. 1 starter, let alone their No. 2. However, the advantage must go to Cliff Lee here. Cain’s numbers suggest he has been greatly overachieving and it is too early to know if this will be a trend throughout his career. Cain is a fly ball pitcher, 42 percent career fly ball rate, and benefits greatly from pitching in AT&T Park: Home ERA 3.19/Road ERA 3.76.
This could also explain his huge differences in ERA and FIP. However, Cain is still a very solid pitcher. Lee has been consistently very good over the past three seasons and a move to the NL for a full season will only benefit him.
Therefore, in my opinion, Cliff Lee projects to be a better pitcher than Matt Cain in 2011.

NHL Embarrassment: The New York Islanders Made a Mockery Of Hockey
Along with the typical Pittsburgh-bashing articles on this site after the Pens-Islanders debacle, I've also been reading the people who leave comments who chirp their agreement with much enthusiasm.
That makes them almost as big of an embarrassment as the Islanders organization.
What happened two days ago was nothing but an ambush on the Penguins and the National Hockey League. The Islanders scored the goals early, there's no denying that, but their actions throughout the rest of the game were an absolute joke.
There were two disgusting acts in the game. First, Trevor Gillies delivering a blatant headshot to Eric Tangradi (giving him a concussion) and then pummeling him with punches as he laid on the ice. If that wasn't bad enough, Gillies also taunted the injured Tangradi afterwards, proving to everyone how tough he is.
Secondly, Matt Martin (who?) tried to injure Max Talbot by sneaking up behind him and sucker-punching him in the side of the head. If it happened on the street, it would be called assault but, because it's in a hockey game, people think it's acceptable.
For those people who are running around yelling "well, that's hockey", they should be ashamed of themselves. That game was an absolute joke and an embarrassment to the game of hockey.
What the New York Islanders did was tantamount to a planned ambush. The Islanders knew exactly what they were going to do going into that game and they executed their goonish tactics perfectly.

The Islanders organization was fined $100,000, Gillies was suspended nine games, and Martin has to sit down for four games. Who cares?
Gillies is a complete goof who has played a grand total of 47 games even though he's 32 years old. In other words, he's a career minor leaguer who really doesn't hurt his team by being suspended.
Martin has nine points in 50 career games and is a -15 for his career—not exactly Bryan Trottier.
The NHL had a chance to send a strong message that this kind of garbage isn't going to be tolerated and guess what they did? They blew it, of course.
Gillies should have been sat down for at least 10 games and Martin should have gotten the same. If roles were reversed and Max Talbot attacked Martin in the same manner, people would be calling for his head and then claim favoritism if a suspension wasn't issued.
You would also think with all the concern about concussions in the league, there would have been a message sent when someone like Gillies delivers an intentional shot to the head and then continues the attack with punches. That guy has no place in a professional sports league and the fact that some people are cheering his actions are a joke.
Mario Lemieux issued a statement today. “The NHL had a chance to send a clear and strong message that those kinds of actions are unacceptable and embarrassing to the sport. It failed."
“We, as a league, must do a better job of protecting the integrity of the game and the safety of our players. We must make it clear that those kinds of actions will not be tolerated and will be met with meaningful disciplinary action."

There is no true fan of hockey who can defend what occurred in that game. Colin Campbell and Gary Bettman should be ashamed of themselves for failing to make a statement.
Of course, this article will be bombarded by Flyers fans who claim this crap was "real hockey" and who will say the NHL favors the Penguins.
Then, you'll have the Islanders fans come and spew their hate about "making a statement" and "turning the corner." The bottom line is that the Islanders are one of the worst teams in the league because Garth Snow is as bad of a GM as he was a goaltender. You make statements by playing tough hockey and winning games, not committing borderline criminal acts and acting like you've accomplished something afterwards.
So if you want to defend this crap, go ahead, but that only puts you on the same level as Campbell and Bettman.
The Islanders aren't just a joke in the standings, they're also an embarrassment to the NHL and the sport they claim to love.

Manny Pacquiao: Five Contenders Who May Spoil His 20-Fight Winning Streak
Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao recently announced he will continue fighting until he reaches the age of 35.
Pacquiao will be up against Shane Mosley on May 7 and if he wins over the Pomona slugger, he will have registered a 14-fight winning streak since losing to Erik Morales in 2005.
The pound-for-pound king has just celebrated his 32nd birthday last Dec. 17 and it follows he will have at least three more years and at least five more opponents before he calls it a career.
Assuming he fights once more due to an agreed rematch clause in his contract and after reaching his self-appointed retirement age, he will then be clocking a 20-fight winning streak. That assumes, of course, that he wins all his remaining fights.
He are five aspiring contenders who may try to spoil his possible 20-fight winning streak.

Carmelo Anthony to the Lakers Trade Rumors: 10 Reasons It Will Never Happen
What would have been a scenario that could only be dreamed up in Hollywood, Carmelo Anthony doesn't appear to be headed to the Los Angeles Laker any longer.
When reports first emerged that Carmelo Anthony would be traded to the Los Angeles Lakers, fans of the Lakers hit the internet to get the latest buzz.
The LA Times is now reporting that the trade is unlikely to occur as other teams will continue to pursue the Carmelo Anthony trade.
From the beginning, this trade had its problems, here are ten reasons why it won't happen:

Kenny Florian: Reason For Drop To Featherweight Is Shot at Jose Aldo In Brazil
Earlier this week, Kenny Florian confirmed the rumors that he was going to drop to the Featherweight division. On Wednesday, February 9th the true reason for the drop form the 155 pound weightclass to 145 was revealed by Florian's manager.
“We went down to 45 because that fight with Aldo was one that stuck in my head, and I’m just like Dana White, I want to make the biggest and the best fights that I possibly can, and I’m thinking Kenny Florian vs. Jose Aldo one day, I think that’s a pretty big fight,” Malki Kawa told MMAWeekly.com
The Florian versus Aldo fight was offered at 155 pounds back in October of last year. Dana White confirmed the fight offer on "The Fight Fix" last year, “That is true,” White said. “Here’s the thing, Jose Aldo’s been talking about moving up to 155 pounds. Well, we had a slot and said, ‘alright, you want to move up to 155 pounds?’ and he said, ‘ah yeah, never mind.'”
Aldo instead elected to stay at 145 to retain and defend his World Extreme Cagefighting Featherweight title.
Since that time the WEC has merged with the UFC and Aldo is now the UFC Featherweight champion.
Florian's manager said that he will be ready to fight in June and would like, “A top contender. Whoever the No. 1 contender is at that point is the guy I’d like to get,” Kawa offered. “What would be my ideal situation for me is for him to get a fight in June, whoever the No. 1 contender is, win that fight, and then hopefully set something up for Brazil with (Jose) Aldo if the UFC’s up for it.”

The UFC will make it's return to Brazil on August 27th, 2011 at the HSBC Arena in Rio de Janeiro.
Florian last fight was a loss to Gray Maynard in August of last year. Florian was scheduled to take on Evan Dunham on the "Fight for the Troops Two" card in January 2011, but Florian had to withdraw due to a knee injury.
Aldo will face Mark Hominick at UFC 129 in Toronto on April 30th in the first defense of his UFC title.

Alfonso Soriano: Former Hall Of Fame Caliber Second Basemen
By Brian Holt, Senior Writer for 4thandHome.com
Remember When is a series of articles on nostalgia, really. Something to whisk you to way back to when you had that favorite player who was destined to be the greatest of all time, but something strange happened along the trip to Cooperstown.
This week, remember when... Alfonso Soriano was the most coveted second baseman in fantasy baseball, not a slightly better-than-average outfielder saddling the Cubs with a $20 million a year contract?
Just imagine, if you will, a second baseman hitting .280 with 35-plus HRs and over 100 RBI stealing as many as 43 bases in a single season! This is the kind of production fantasy managers generally only get in their dreams. But for one lucky manager in your league, it was a reality from 2002-2005.
Year | Team | Runs | HR | RBI | SB | Avg |
2002 | NYY | 128 | 39 | 102 | 41 | .300 |
2003 | NYY | 114 | 38 | 91 | 35 | .290 |
2004 | TEX | 77 | 28 | 91 | 18 | .280 |
2005 | TEX | 102 | 36 | 104 | 30 | .268 |

Then, Alfonso went to Washington, where all good things go to die.
Suddenly defense became an issue and the outfield became the cure. That first season still seemed great—how can you complain about 46 home runs? But the eligibility definitely caused his value to take a hit.
Then, Soriano signed that fateful deal with the most cursed team in baseball, the Chicago Cubs. Now they’re paying all that money for this type of production:
Year | Team | Runs | HR | RBI | SB | Avg |
2010 | CHC | 67 | 24 | 79 | 5 | .258 |
I don’t know who I feel worse for, the Cubs, Soriano or those poor fantasy owners who thought they were in for a 10-year run of greatness.

Seven Reasons Why Ricky Rubio Would Be a Great Fit for the Toronto Raptors
There has been quite a bit of confusion over the whole situation with Ricky Rubio, and a lot of people are wondering what happened/is happening with him, when he could possible be coming to the NBA, and then of course, once he arrives, where he will play.
Well, here are the answers to those questions to the best of my knowledge. According to what I have read, the earliest he could come to the NBA is the 2011/2012 season, because he has a buyout option in his current contract with FC Barcelona.
However, if he were to decide to come over and play in the NBA next season, it would have to be with the Minnesota Timberwolves, and it is still unknown whether or not he actually wants to play in Minnesota.
With this being the case, it is quite likely that Minnesota will try to trade him while his value is still high. If this happens, I suggest that the Raptors make a strong push to acquire him, if the price is right.
However, Rubio could also wait another two years, which brings us to the 2012/2013 season, by which point he would become a free agent and would be free to undergo negotiations with teams that are not the called the Minnesota Timberwolves. Therefore, if we would like to wait two more years we could and should make ourselves one of those teams.

Philadelphia Eagles: Why Promoting Juan Castillo Makes Sense
I'm not going to pretend like I wasn't floored when the Eagles announced that offensive line coach Juan Castillo was going to be taking over the defense.
In fact, my first reaction was "What in the hell is Andy doing?!"
But upon further review, this move could actually work.
First off, there isn't a harder-working coach on the Eagles' staff than Castillo. The guy lives and breathes football and after getting to watch him up-close at Training Camp and practice a couple times, you really get the feel for how intense he truly is.
His work ethic makes me believe learning how to run a defense won't be an issue for him—especially since he played on that side of the ball in the USFL and coached on that side for a while—and his intense personality has me optimistic that he'll run a more attacking style of defense that Philly is used to seeing.
And apparently, Castillo has always wanted to coach the defense, saying in his introductory press conference that he "always told defensive guys (he) was stuck on the wrong side."
There will be some growing pains, but Castillo seems like a guy who will instantly have the respect and trust of the guys he's coaching, which is something Sean McDermott never seemed to have.
Another factor in making this move had to be the availability of Howard Mudd, who will be taking over Castillo's spot as the offensive line coach. Mudd is consistently brought up as one of the best offensive line coaches in the game and seems to be the offense's version of Jim Washburn, the well-respected defensive line coach recently hired by the Eagles as well.
Had the team not been able to land Mudd, I'm not sure Reid would have felt as comfortable moving Castillo from that spot. But because Reid could go out and get a guy who he felt was just as good if not better than Castillo, it made the decision a lot easier.
Then there's the CBA uncertainty, which seems to be figuring into every move that's been made by every team this offseason and last.
Castillo was a close friend of the late Jim Johnson and talked defense with him all the time. Castillo knows the terminology he used, which was used for the most part by McDermott as well.
So if the team were to lose a lot of the offseason due to the lack of a CBA, they would be able to catch up much quicker because Castillo is not going to be completely overhauling the system and the terminology like a coach from another team might want to do.
The only thing that really still confuses me is the wait. If this is what Reid knew he wanted to do and the job was Castillo's to lose (as he said it was in Castillo's introductory press conference), then why did this search take almost a month?
According to Reid, he was just covering his bases. But if he were really just covering his bases, why not wait the extra five days and interview some of the assistants from the Green Bay Packers and Pittsburgh Steelers once the Super Bowl was over?
With a few solid candidates like Mike Trgovac, Winston Moss and Ray Horton, it probably would have been worth the extra wait to talk to those guys and see if any of them blew him away.

If they didn't, then Reid really hadn't lost anything because he still could have promoted Castillo, who wasn't going anywhere.
The only thing I can think is Mudd wanted a resolution sooner rather than later because obviously, if Reid went ahead and hired a guy from the outside, it would have meant Castillo staying put with the offensive line and no place for Mudd.
Time will tell if this was the right move for Reid and the Eagles, but on the surface, it's a move that I believe has a ton of promise and the potential to turn the Eagles back into a defensive powerhouse.
Super Bowl: Time For Seattle's Qwest Field to Host
With half the country buried in snow, including Super Bowl city Dallas, it seems like a perfect time to bring up the notion we floated last March: It’s time to start talking about bringing the Super Bowl to Seattle.
You know, balmy, dry, 50-degree Seattle?
In recent years, the NFL has begun branching out its Super stage, moving from the favored warmer or controlled climes of Miami, Arizona, Tampa, San Diego and New Orleans to cold-weather cities like Detroit, Dallas, Indianapolis and New York.
Seattle is warmer and more snow free than most northern cities at this time of year.
When the Seahawks played the Steelers in Super Bowl XL at Ford Field in February 2006, Detroit was mired in its own snowstorm. The game was played indoors, but it was 33 degrees and snowing outside on Super Bowl Sunday.
It was 47 degrees and dry in Seattle.
The last four title games have been played in warm cities—Miami, Glendale and Tampa—where the temperatures were in the 60's or 70's. But now the NFL is beginning a stretch where it plays three of the next four games in cold-weather cities: Dallas this year, Indy next year and New York in 2014 (New Orleans is the 2013 site).
Just like the Detroit Super Bowl, these upcoming games are all rewards for those cities, chances for them to show off their shining new football cathedrals.

Ford Field opened in 2002, Cowboys Stadium opened in 2009, Indy’ Lucas Oil Stadium opened in 2008 and the New Meadowlands Stadium opened this season.
Seattle never got to show off Qwest Field, which opened in 2002, on such a grand stage. Maybe it was because Seahawks management didn’t push for it. More likely it was because the NFL didn’t want to consider playing in an outdoor stadium in a northern city in February.
Well, with New York hosting in 2014, that argument is out. The NFL has no excuse and the Seahawks need to start submitting their proposals to host a game in the latter half of this decade.
The weather in Seattle in February is very favorable for a football game, with temperatures often in the 40's or 50's and little or no rainfall. That makes it appealing not only for game day, but for events around the city in the week leading up to the game.
You certainly can’t say the same for Detroit in 2006 and Dallas this year, or probably for Indy next year and New York in 2014.
Here’s a look at the past five Super Bowl dates and the weather in Seattle and the Super Bowl cities on those days:
Feb. 4, 2010
Seattle: 57 degrees, light rain.
Miami: 78 degrees, no rain.

Feb. 1, 2009
Seattle: 44 degrees, no rain.
Tampa: 68 degrees, no rain.
Feb. 3, 2008
Seattle: 39 degrees, no rain.
Glendale, Ariz: 61 degrees, no rain.
Feb. 4, 2007
Seattle: 51 degrees, light rain.
Miami: 69 degrees, heavy rain.
Feb. 5, 2006
Seattle: 47 degrees, no rain.
Detroit: 33 degrees, snow.
Some people will try to argue that Qwest Field, at 67,000 seats, doesn’t meet the NFL’s required capacity of 70,000. But the stadium is capable of expanding to 72,000, so that argument is moot.
Really, there is no reason at all for Seattle not to host a Super Bowl. In fact, outside of California, Arizona and Florida, it’s probably the best place to do it.
And it’s time.
Check out this slideshow to find out why the Seahawks have not had a draft pick make the Pro Bowl in the last five years.
